With the exception of certain situations, you have the right to confidentiality in therapy. You may give written permission to your therapist to share information with any person or organization that you chose. You may also revoke that permission at any time.

Under law, the following are exceptions to your right to confidentiality:

  • If your therapist believes you to be at imminent risk to harm yourself or someone else, they must take steps to protect you or whoever is in danger.
  • If your therapist becomes aware that a person in a vulnerable position like a child under the age of 18, elderly person, or a person with a disability is being abused, they must take steps to protect that person, even if it means violating your confidentiality.
  • If your record is requested by court order, it must be given to the court.  For most people, this is an extremely rare occurrence.

Every effort will be made to protect your confidentiality. If one of the above mentioned exceptions occurs, your therapist will discuss it with you. If you have questions about confidentiality, please ask your therapist.
