Whether you are reaching out for the first time or you are a therapy veteran, we know it is a big step to begin a relationship with a new therapist. If this is your first time meeting with a new therapist, there can be a lot of anxiety and worry about the unknowns. If you have had other experiences in therapy, you may also be grieving the loss of an old therapeutic relationship or healing from a problematic one. Whatever circumstances brought you to us, we hope to help ease some of the worries even before we meet.
We believe that one of the best predictors of success in therapy is how well your therapist fits with what you need. We encourage you to poke around our website and check out our social media pages to get a sense of our practice. Take a look online and see what we have written to help get a feel for what your new therapist believes and how she practices.
In general, we approach our work together from a lens of personal growth through affirming care. Our work is always rooted in a trauma-informed, biopsychosocial philosophy - no matter what techniques are used. We may utilize evidenced-based approaches like EMDR or DBT strategies, but they will always be guided by the principles of establishment of therapeutic safety, collaboration, client choice, earning your trust, and empowerment. To learn more about Trauma-informed Care, visit The Institute of Trauma Informed Care.
We support and believe in the inherent strengths of our clients. We value their individual journeys and wisdom. We also believe that a lot of psychological distress can come from experiences of oppression, discrimination, marginalization, and rigid expectations around the roles we play based on our gender (perceived or self identified), sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, spiritual beliefs, and ability status. We believe there can be healing in exploring this distress.
We are not the experts on your life. Although we have knowledge about emotional and behavioral health, you have significantly more knowledge about your experience of the world. By working together, we will collaboratively help you meet your goals.
